The Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology (PDGH) provides specialised care for infants, children and adolescents with disorders of the digestive system, liver, pancreas and nutrition.
The department offers comprehensive outpatient, inpatient and advanced endoscopy services through a multidisciplinary team working closely with Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Intensive Care, Interventional Radiology and Transfusion Medicine. Committed to compassionate, evidence-based care, the department also promotes education, innovation and clinical research to improve outcomes for children with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
Outpatient Services: Clinics are conducted every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, providing expert evaluation, diagnosis and long-term management for gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic and nutritional disorders. Approximately 6,000–7,000 children are seen annually.
Inpatient Services: Comprehensive care for children requiring specialised investigations, intensive medical management, nutritional support and treatment of complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Approximately 300–350 children are admitted each year.
Conditions Managed: Chronic diarrhoea, constipation, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), recurrent vomiting, feeding and swallowing disorders, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver diseases, biliary disorders, pancreatitis, pancreatic disorders, nutritional disorders, intestinal failure, inherited metabolic and genetic disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas.
Paediatric GI Endoscopy: Diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, oesophageal dilatation, variceal band ligation and sclerotherapy, nasogastric and nasojejunal tube placement, foreign body removal and intraoperative enteroscopy. Advanced procedures including ERCP, EUS and endoscopic cystogastrostomy are performed in collaboration with the Department of Gastroenterology.
Advanced Clinical Services: Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), Plasma Exchange (PLEX) for selected liver disorders, comprehensive liver transplant evaluation and long-term post-transplant care through a multidisciplinary team.
Education
The department is working towards establishing an FNB training programme in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology to train future specialists.
Research
Clinical research includes paediatric inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, gastrointestinal and liver manifestations of COVID-19, and national multicentre studies.
The department actively contributes to ISPGHAN guidelines, multicentre research initiatives and national training programmes, advancing evidence-based care in paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology.
