Emergency Medicine

The Department of Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) provides specialised emergency care for infants, children and adolescents up to 15 years of age.

Functioning as an independent unit since 2003, the department delivers 24×7 emergency services at CMC Vellore and the Ranipet Paediatric Emergency Unit. Equipped with modern emergency facilities and advanced monitoring systems, the department focuses on the early recognition, rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilisation and treatment of critically ill and injured children.

Through a multidisciplinary team and evidence-based protocols, the department provides timely, compassionate and family-centred emergency care while supporting education, research and disaster preparedness.

24×7 Emergency Services: Comprehensive emergency care for medical, surgical and trauma emergencies in infants, children and adolescents.

Triage & Resuscitation: Nurse-led triage system with dedicated teams for resuscitation, emergency management and short-stay observation (24–48 hours).

Critical Care: Management of severe infections, respiratory distress, seizures, poisoning, shock, trauma, dengue, H1N1, COVID-19, heat stroke and other life-threatening emergencies.

Facilities: 30-bed emergency unit, including 8 dedicated resuscitation beds, advanced monitoring systems and regularly updated clinical protocols.

Disaster Preparedness: Active participation in institutional disaster management with regular mock drills and epidemic response planning.

Education
The department offers structured academic and clinical training through a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Senior Residency training, postgraduate paediatric rotations, nursing education and paramedic training. Educational activities include bedside teaching, case discussions, simulation-based learning, procedural skills workshops, journal clubs, POCUS training, PALS, BLS, EMTC teaching and the Paediatric Emergency (Medical & Trauma) Masterclass.

Research
The department actively contributes to clinical research and evidence-based practice in paediatric emergency medicine, with publications in national and international journals covering emergency care, infectious diseases, critical care, trauma, simulation-based education and paediatric emergency outcomes.
