Endocrinology

The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology at Christian Medical College, Vellore provides specialised care for infants, children and adolescents with hormonal, metabolic and endocrine disorders.

The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology at Christian Medical College, Vellore provides specialised care for infants, children and adolescents with hormonal, metabolic and endocrine disorders. Established in 1987, the department is one of India’s pioneering paediatric endocrinology services and serves as a referral centre for children from across the country and neighbouring regions.

Supported by a multidisciplinary team of paediatric endocrinologists, diabetes nurse educators, dietitians and allied healthcare professionals, the department is committed to delivering evidence-based, family-centred care through specialised clinics, advanced diagnostics, education and research.

Outpatient Services: Specialist clinics for growth disorders, puberty disorders, thyroid diseases, adrenal disorders, pituitary disorders, calcium and bone disorders, diabetes, neonatal endocrinology and inborn errors of metabolism (IEM).

Inpatient Services: Management of endocrine emergencies including diabetic ketoacidosis, adrenal crisis, electrolyte disorders, diabetes insipidus and acute metabolic decompensation, with consultation support across paediatric specialties.

Specialised Clinics & Programmes: Dedicated Diabetes Clinic, Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) Clinic, Newborn Screening Programme for Congenital Hypothyroidism and the Family Fitness & Healthy Weight Programme.

Diagnostic Services: Hormonal stimulation and suppression tests including Growth Hormone, GnRH, Synacthen, HCG, Oral Glucose Tolerance, Water Deprivation, IGF-1 Generation and Fasting Studies.

Diabetes Care: Comprehensive diabetes education, insulin management, nutritional counselling, remote follow-up support and family support programmes in partnership with the Life for a Child with Diabetes (LFAC) programme.

Education
The department offers a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Paediatric Endocrinology and is actively working towards establishing a three-year NMC-recognised training programme. Faculty contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and fellowship teaching through bedside training, case discussions, continuing medical education programmes and outreach activities.

Research
The department has an active research programme in paediatric endocrinology, diabetes, metabolic and genetic disorders, contributing to national and international collaborative studies, consensus guidelines and externally funded research projects, including those supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
