Neurology

The Department of Paediatric Neurology provides specialised care for infants, children and adolescents with neurological disorders.

The Department of Paediatric Neurology provides specialised care for infants, children and adolescents with neurological disorders. Established as an independent unit in 2018, the department is one of India’s leading referral centres, offering comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services for children from across the country.

Through a multidisciplinary approach and close collaboration with Neurosurgery, Neurology, Medical Genetics, Developmental Paediatrics, Paediatric Orthopaedics and other paediatric specialties, the department provides precision diagnostics, advanced therapies and long-term neurological care tailored to each child.

Conditions Managed: Epilepsy, cerebral palsy, neurometabolic disorders, movement disorders, neuroinfections, neuroinflammatory disorders, childhood stroke, neurogenetic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, peripheral nerve disorders, inherited neurodegenerative diseases, neuromuscular disorders and neonatal neurological conditions.

Specialised Services: Medical and surgical epilepsy management, precision medicine for genetic epilepsies, bone marrow transplantation for selected neurometabolic disorders in collaboration with the Department of Haematology, genetic counselling, prenatal diagnosis and transition to adult neurology care.

Outpatient Clinics: Paediatric Neurology – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; Epilepsy Clinic – Wednesday; Neuromuscular Clinic – Friday.

Inpatient Care: Dedicated paediatric neurology ward with specialised neuro nurses and multidisciplinary support including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and dietary services.

Diagnostic Services: Dedicated paediatric neuroelectrophysiology laboratory providing electroencephalography (EEG), nerve conduction studies, evoked potentials and long-term video EEG monitoring.

Education
The department offers a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Paediatric Neurology and a three-year DM programme in Paediatric Neurology under the National Medical Commission. Faculty contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and superspecialty training, participate as resource persons at national and international conferences, and support observer programmes for clinicians from mission hospitals and other institutions.

Research
The department undertakes clinical and collaborative research in epilepsy, neurometabolic disorders, neurogenetic diseases, neuromuscular disorders and rare neurological conditions. Ongoing work includes multicentre clinical trials, participation in the ICMR Rare Disease Registry, therapeutic drug monitoring, metabolic diagnostics and translational research in collaboration with the Departments of Neurological Sciences, Clinical Biochemistry and Pharmacology.
