The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Christian Medical College, Vellore has been providing specialised surgical care for infants, children and adolescents since 1978.

The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Christian Medical College, Vellore has been providing specialised surgical care for infants, children and adolescents since 1978. Serving patients across six CMC campuses, the department offers comprehensive, family-centred care through a team of experienced paediatric surgeons, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.

The department provides advanced surgical care for both common and complex congenital and acquired conditions, combining expertise in open, minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Children requiring ongoing follow-up receive coordinated multidisciplinary care in collaboration with other paediatric specialties to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Emergency Services: 24×7 emergency paediatric surgical care for neonates, children and adolescents through an integrated emergency and trauma service.

Core Surgical Services: Neonatal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, paediatric urology, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, trauma and burns, soft tissue surgery, groin and abdominal wall surgery, and management of congenital anomalies.

Advanced Surgical Care: Minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, antenatal counselling for congenital anomalies, specialised paediatric urological investigations, and day-care surgical services where appropriate.

Community Outreach: Burn rehabilitation programmes, injury prevention initiatives, community screening and education programmes, and collaborative paediatric surgical training through the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS).

Education
The department offers an M.Ch. programme in Paediatric Surgery accredited by the National Medical Commission and Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. It also provides undergraduate and postgraduate surgical training, short-term observerships, and advanced exposure to minimally invasive, robotic and neonatal surgery.

Research
The department actively undertakes clinical and translational research in paediatric surgery, including regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy, paediatric urology, burn care, wound healing and surgical innovation. In collaboration with the Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR), ongoing research focuses on developing advanced therapies for congenital surgical conditions and improving surgical outcomes through innovation and evidence-based practice.
