Paediatric Infectious Diseases at CMC Vellore provides specialised care for children with complex, difficult-to-treat and high-risk infections.
The service was established in the 1980s and has evolved from a consultation service into a dedicated specialty with multidisciplinary clinical care, education, research and infection-control expertise.
Today, the department works closely with multiple paediatric and surgical specialties to care for children with infections ranging from tuberculosis and HIV to congenital, hospital-acquired, opportunistic and drug-resistant infections.
Our approach combines evidence-based medicine, antimicrobial stewardship and compassionate, family-centred care.
The department provides outpatient and inpatient consultation services for children up to 15 years of age, including those with complex or high-risk infections.
Outpatient Services: Diagnosis and management of tuberculosis, HIV, congenital infections, difficult-to-treat and drug-resistant infections, bone and joint infections, brain and spine infections, complicated urinary infections and other uncommon infections.
Infections in High-Risk Children: Specialised care for children undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplantation or immunosuppressive therapy, as well as children with primary immunodeficiency disorders.
Inpatient Consultations: Multidisciplinary infectious disease support for children admitted under paediatric medical and surgical specialties, including management of hospital-acquired, postoperative and opportunistic infections.
Immunisation & Infection Prevention: Guidance on vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis for children with immunodeficiencies and those undergoing procedures or treatments that increase infection risk.
