Oncology

The department diagnoses and treats a wide range of childhood cancers, including blood cancers, brain tumours and solid organ cancers

The Department of Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) provides holistic and compassionate care for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders.

Established as a specialty in 2004 and an independent department in November 2024, it is supported by a multidisciplinary team of consultants, junior doctors, specialist nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, play therapists, occupational therapists and social workers.

The department diagnoses and treats a wide range of childhood cancers, including blood cancers, brain tumours and solid organ cancers, as well as benign blood disorders such as anaemias, bleeding disorders, inherited bone marrow failure syndromes and inborn errors of immunity.

Treatment may include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and stem cell transplantation. Working closely with paediatric and surgical specialties, the department provides comprehensive, coordinated and family-centred care.

Outpatient Clinic: Monday afternoons, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Day Care: Chemotherapy, blood transfusions, intrathecal injections, bone marrow examinations and central line care.

Inpatient Services: Dedicated chemotherapy preparation area with laminar flow facilities and specially trained nursing staff for infection prevention and central line care. Stem Cell

Transplantation: Autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation for selected cancers, bone marrow failure syndromes and inborn errors of immunity.

Education
The department offers a two-year FNB Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology Oncology under the National Board of Examinations, with plans to transition to a three-year DrNB programme.

Research
Clinical research is actively encouraged, with ongoing work in Langerhans cell histiocytosis, brain tumours, bone tumours and cancer predisposition syndromes.
